All those teachers who have ever implemented this classroom practice successfully would agree that show and tell activities provide countless opportunities for both fun and learning. These sessions let students share their experiences and introduce children to the different perceptions, environments and interests of their fellow classmates. And what’s more, it can be a very useful tool for teachers to observe their students’ passions & interests in a more natural context which may lead to enhancing a much more individualized and real learning in the classroom.

Now, what I think it’s a great challenge, is to have this experience in a bilingual classroom. I have organized lots of sessions over many years but I have to admit that if we want our students to benefit from them we should create a good atmosphere in class as well as respecting students learning pace. Students should have a go only if they feel confident enough to bring something into class and talk about it in the targeted language, in this case, English. Thanks to our British council bilingual project in our bilingual school young children start at the age of 7 or 8. It’s also worth noting that flexibility plays a key role here. Children feel free to decide when & how to do it. The emphasis is on the communication skills. It turns out to be amazing how these young kids are able to communicate and interact with others by using a foreign language. Children feel very motivated and understand what is the purpose of this kind of activities.

Due to a great success, parents are invited to immerse themselves in this wonderful experience with their kids. They sit in class and enjoy watching their kids explain instructions on games or recipes, talking about their last holidays or just describing their favourite things to an enthusiastic audience. After that, everyone ( including parents ) is allowed to ask questions in order to clarify any points or just to extend more knowledge. Real interaction takes place then. Students learn to be competent in a foreign language and parents feel very proud of what their kids can achieve without drilling grammar exercises or tests. And more importantly, the relationship with parents and children grow stronger as children are the real protagonists of their learning. How do I feel about this as a teacher? Very relaxed indeed. This is just another great example of giving up power in the classroom at the expense of happiness.

  1. Can you please tell me how to say “Show and Tell” in Spanish? Is it “mostrar y compartir?” And can it be used as a noun? For example, “Para el mostrar y compartir, tu puedes traer algo rojo manana.”

      Thanks for your comment. I’ve never seen these activities in the Spanish classes. So I don’t think that expression can be literally translated. Maybe you could try something like ” Hacer una exposición o presentación”. Good luck!!!
